Welcome to UWA; I’m your Guild President, Matt Mckenzie.

The Guild is the organisation that represents students on campus – we ensure that you get the best possible education from your time at UWA. The university is in a period of massive transition. We have a new course structure being implemented, the biggest overhaul in our history. I’ll be working hard with my team this year to ensure that you don’t get left behind. The Guild is here to stand up for you against inequitable treatment or help you appeal unfair assessment. We’re here to listen to your complaints, so don’t be shy.

Being at UWA isn’t just about getting an education – it’s also about having fun. We have the best lifestyle of any campus in Australia, and you should make the most of it. Join the Guild, join as many clubs as you can, go to their events, and run on their committees. The more involved you are, the better your experience will be – this is the best time of your life, so enjoy it.
My favourite Guild events include O-Day Festival, Oktoberfest, End of Semester Show and Prosh. Prosh is a must-do event, where thousands of students dressed up and overran Perth raising over $150 000 for charities last year. We also support the many clubs and societies on campus, who run a wide variety of events ranging from political debates to massive parties, careers fairs, sporting competitions and much more.

It can be tough being a student, and that’s why the Guild has a range of services available to assist when you need it most.
If you need help to pay a bill, the Guild can help with a loan. If you need to make some extra cash, sell your old textbooks through our Secondhand Bookshop and pick up some cheap ones yourself. If you are feeling like it is all becoming a bit too much, there are free counselling services available on campus or you can speak to someone from the Guild’s Welfare department. We also have specialised services like the Women’s Office and International Student Services, both of whom can be found in Guild Hall.

It is an amazing honour to be your President this year and I look forward to the many great changes we’ll be implementing on campus. If I can leave you with two requests, they would be to join the Guild and become as involved on campus as you can. We can’t do all these things without your support, so join us to get awesome discounts. University is about being involved, so take every chance you get and you will be rewarded. Don’t leave with just a degree.

Keep Winning,
Mckenzie
