Our role: we’re here to ensure that your welfare needs
e.g. financial, medical, social and practical are met.
We want to make sure that you have satisfactory access to information/
services/skills which may help you resolve some of the problems that can
arise through everyday life throughout your time at UWA.
We do this in several ways:
- Student survival week aka Stress less week (run last semester)
where we invite outside organizations, guild departments and UWA Health
promotion to come and provide useful information on Centrelink appeals,
stress less tips, etc to students in an informal setting.
- Student survival handbook (released last semester) which contains
information ranging from the academic appeals process to cheap and easy
recipes and information on guild grants and loans
- Workshops, notably:
o Car maintenance
o Financial budgeting
o How to travel on a budget
o Centrelink
- Training (to take place this semester):
o Mental health first aid training will be offered to students as part of mental
health week at a heavily subsidised fee
o Responsible service of alcohol training will also be offered to UWA clubs
followed by the general student population
- Mental health week (this semester) which centers around mental health issues
that are generally predominant in the student population
To stay in touch with UWA students, we also run online surveys.
Last semester, the student poverty survey was released.
From this we have been able to identify issues that are concerning students
at the moment e.g. the pressure work places on studying.
In conjunction with the Education Council, we are currently writing a
full report of our analysis of the data. It will be available in September.
If you are interested in any of the above information, would like to know more,
or would like to obtain a copy of the student survival handbook,
feel free to email the guild welfare officer Alexandra Pieniazek at
welfare@guild.uwa.edu.au. Also, regular updates on the Welfare department are
released via G-news.
*New Campaign*
The final report on student finances was released by Universities Australia this week,
highlighting the extent of student poverty. It’s time to act. Click here for more
