Here at the Queer Department we provide support and information for Queer (gay, lesbian, bi, trans, intersex and questioning) students on campus. The Dept is represented by a pair of elected co-officers who are responsible for organising the collective and representing the Dept to the UWA Guild Council, the Cross- Campus Queer Network and Queer Collaborations (the annual queer student conference). The Dept holds regular social activities throughout the year aimed at promoting the visibility of queers on campus and raising awareness of queer issues in the community. One of the most important is Pride Week which celebrates the beginning of Perth Pride Month (October). The Dept also participates in the annual conference of Australian queer youth during the winter break.
We are located on the 2nd floor of the Guild Building at the southern end of the corridor (it’s the room closest to the elevator). We have internet access, books, DVDs, an X-box, kettle, microwave, sandwich toaster, fridge, comfy couches and enough coffee and Milo to satisfy even the most enthusiastic drinker. We exist for students on both sides of the closet. Most importantly we offer a safe communal space for anyone seeking time-out and a refuge. The Dept’s a no-pressure assumption-free environment and we welcome all students, queer or straight but not narrow minded.
You don’t have to pay money to sign up or even be a very good student, just come along to our events or come up to the room to meet some cool people and chill out. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call or e-mail the Co-officers who are always happy to provide support and advice.
